We all like watching movies; cinema has been around for a verylong time. Every year, numerous prestigious awards are gifted to the most worthy. Actors, actresses, movies, directors, choreographers- almost everyone involved in the production of a movie compete with each other to win the title of the best.
What of the ones who don’t do that well for the movies though? Are they given something? People might laugh and say no. But those who follow hollywood closely know that there is, in fact, an award reserved specially for the worst performances in cinema.
This is the Golden Raspberry Award, and is handed out for the worst picture, actor, actress, supporting actor, supporting actress, screen couple, prequel/remake/sequel, director, screenplay, and nominations per picture.
How this started
It all started in the 1980s when UCLA film graduate John Wilson was going back home after a terrible experience at the movies. He had attended a double feature of ‘Can’t Stop the Music’ and ‘Xanadu’, and was wondering about all the bad movies he had seen that year. This prompted him to come up with the concept of awards which will be given for bad performances- the Golden Raspberry Awards- which he co-founded with another UCLA film graduate, Mo Murphy.
The very first award ceremony was a small event with just 30 people joining Wilson in his living room on Oscar night 1981. They had turned up for a potluck dinner and ‘Can’t Stop the Music’ won the award for the Worst Picture that year. This has been happening ever since- the nominations for this year’s awards are out!
Reactions
The Razzies are mostly known amongst critics as the perfect chance to smooth over bloated egos. Many famous people like Halle Berry and Ben Affleck have accepted the awards in a show of good humor because that’s exactly what the Razzies started out as- a way to poke fun! But tablets report that jokes aren’t taken as lightly today. Wilson and Murphy have recalled in various interviews and tidbits that none too many actors take being titled the worst lightly.
But despite all of this, there are many people who have accepted their awards as a show of goodwill. We have Dwayne Johnson who accepted the award for his performance in the Baywatch remake, Halle Berry accepted it for Cat Woman, Tom green for Freddy got fingered, Michael Ferris for Cat Woman, Ben Affleck for Paycheck, Daredevil, and Gigli¸ and Sandra Bullock for All About Steve.
Who would you like to nominate for this award?
